The impact of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred was felt across the Southern Gold Coast, but it has also highlighted the strength, resilience and community spirit that defines our city. From emergency services to everyday locals, the community showed up for the clean-up and to assist those most affected. Local businesses also rallied together, providing free meals to those in need and host charity fundraisers to support recovery efforts. The response has demonstrated once again that when challenges arise, our community steps up without hesitation. Thank you to everyone who played a part.

 

The scale of the damage was significant, particularly to trees and vegetation, with more than 3,800 individual tree-related work orders created for City maintenance teams. While tremendous progress has already been made, wet weather has slowed efforts, and it is anticipated that the full clean-up will continue through to June. I sincerely thank the community for your patience and understanding as this essential recovery work progresses.

 

 

As part of the City’s longstanding commitment to building a more resilient community, work continues alongside disaster recovery efforts to strengthen local infrastructure with tomorrow in mind. A standout example is the renewal of the Beree-Badalla Reserve Boardwalk in Palm Beach, which reflects the City’s broader commitment to creating resilient, accessible public spaces that are better equipped to meet the challenges of our coastal environment.

 

Following a major upgrade, the much-loved boardwalk is once again open for the community to enjoy. I was pleased to join Queensland Minister for Disaster Recovery, Ann Leahy, and Member for Burleigh, Hermann Vorster, to officially open the renewed pathway. The upgraded boardwalk spans 640 metres and now features a wider and safer three-metre-wide surface. New amenities include fishing platforms, shaded seating areas, a launch ramp and shower facilities, improving the experience for walkers, cyclists and families.

 

The new structure is built from fibreglass reinforced plastic, a sustainable material well suited to coastal conditions. It offers better grip, increased durability and lower maintenance needs, all while helping to protect the surrounding environment. Impressively, it has already proven its resilience, withstanding recent storm surges from Tropical Cyclone Alfred with ease.

 

Funded through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements via the Queensland Reconstruction Authority, this project is a great example of collaboration across all levels of government. Together, we are not just rebuilding, we are building back stronger for the future.
