Highlights from the Queensland Small Business Commissioner’s Focus Group

On the 7th of February, the Southern Gold Coast Chamber of Commerce had the privilege of hosting Dominique Lamb, the Queensland Small Business Commissioner (QSBC). This cross-industry focus group brought together a diverse group of business leaders at the Currumbin RSL. This discussion focussed on the key challenges facing our southern Gold Coast business community.

The focus group included representatives from multiple sectors such as tourism, hospitality, retail, arts, finance, legal, construction, professional services, advisory, and small business. Key topics of discussion included navigating red tape, confronting regulatory barriers, and pinpointing industry-specific pain points at the federal, state, and local levels.

A notable aspect of the event was the involvement of the Gold Coast Junior Chamber of Commerce. Their participation guaranteed that the voices of young entrepreneurs and startups were heard, highlighting the unique challenges and opportunities they face in today’s business environment.

The QSBC plays a crucial role in growing the small business landscape in Queensland. By providing essential services such as information dissemination, support connection, dispute mediation, advocacy, and resource creation, the Commissioner's office is a pivotal resource for small businesses. The QSBC’s efforts include helping businesses navigate through disputes informally and understanding pressure points like wages and interest rates, which are crucial for maintaining business operations and growth.

An exciting initiative is the QSBC Small Business Friendly (SBF) Program, which is a commitment by the government and large enterprises to collaborate effectively with small businesses. The SBF Program not only hosts an annual conference and awards to recognise outstanding small businesses but also serves as a platform for networking, idea sharing, and barrier reduction. It champions a culture of continuous improvement and collaborative effort, which is essential for creating a thriving business environment.

Events like the focus group discussion hosted by the Southern Gold Coast Chamber of Commerce are fundamental in the growth of the southern Gold Coast business community. Not only providing a forum for voicing concerns and suggestions but also play a crucial role in shaping the landscape in which your businesses operate. Special thanks again to the Currumbin RSL for hosting this focus group and to all attendees who contributed their insights and expertise.

By continuing to support such initiatives and leveraging the resources provided by entities like the QSBC, we can ensure that the southern Gold Coast’s business community not only survives but thrives in an increasingly competitive market.
