Council Update with Cr Josh Martin – June 2026
Planning for growth and opportunity on the Gold Coast
The Gold Coast is entering an important phase of long-term planning, with the City recently
releasing a draft Local Growth Management Strategy (LGMS) and inviting community and
industry feedback.
The LGMS is a 20-year framework that will shape the next City Plan, setting the direction for
how growth is planned and managed across the city. While often associated with housing, it is
equally focused on supporting jobs, business activity and a strong local economy. This is
reinforced through the 9 Directions for Growth, including a clear focus on building on the Gold
Coast’s economic strengths by supporting key industries, protecting employment areas and
creating more local jobs.
By 2046, the Gold Coast is expected to see significant increases in population, employment
and demand for services. Planning ahead provides certainty for industry, supports investment
confidence and helps ensure infrastructure keeps pace with business needs, particularly
around movement, connectivity and access.
As the Gold Coast continues to grow, I have consistently advocated for responsible,
well-planned growth that supports economic opportunities, and the draft LGMS reflects this
through more than 18 months of planning work and stakeholder input. As it is refined, it is
important we get this right, with ongoing engagement from the business community helping
ensure it supports strong, long-term economic outcomes.
Have your say
The City is inviting feedback to help refine the LGMS before it informs the next City Plan.
For businesses, this is an opportunity to provide input on how growth should be managed,
where jobs should be supported, and what infrastructure is needed to enable future growth.
