Business Resilience in challenging times; lessons from elite sport

Join us to for a delicious breakfast in glorious Coolangatta as we hear from Gold Coast Titans CEO Steve Mitchell, on lessons learned about resilience in the world of elite sport & how they translate into lessons for business in these trying times. We will also hear from Anthony Mitchell Director of the Clontarf Foundation.

Steve Mitchell CEO of the Titans

Steve MitchellSteve Mitchell is an experienced sports administrator, and the current Chief Executive Officer of the Gold Coast Titans. Appointed in 2019, following the announcement of a new club ownership model under the Frizelle and Kelly consortium, Mitchell was chosen to steer the Titans into its most important era to date.

His appointment followed a lean period for the club on field with limited success and financial challenges, and a mandate for change was quickly established.

Bringing a wealth of management knowledge, and experience in transformational business periods, Mitchell was part of a management group that drove the North Queensland Cowboys’ to a meteoric rise. During this period, the Cowboys progressed from cellar dwellers, finishing last in 2010, to their eventual crowning as Premiers of the National Rugby League in 2015.

His most recent appointment was as CEO of Touch Football Australia, where he helped grow the code to a new level of commercialism, taking the primarily amateur-based sport to a nationally broadcasted league, with television backing and a newly forged alliance forged with the NRL.

Raised in the rural Queensland town of Murgon, Mitchell has broad experience spanning corporate, media, with many years as a small business owner.

During an interview on Channel Nine news in mid-2019, and after parting ways with the club’s head coach and placed last on the table, Mitchell was asked how he planned to “re-build the club”. “Hard work” his response.

Since, the Titans have undergone significant change across both playing group and off field business structure. Following a strong finish to 2020, the team finished one win outside of the playoffs, whilst attracting the league’s hottest talent to join the club for the 2021 season and beyond.
