Coolangatta and Kirra Master Plan Project Update
The City is preparing a place based master plan for the Coolangatta and Kirra business centres that will improve public spaces and enhance the lifestyle within the area.
Over the last year the City has been working closely with a group of stakeholders to identify what matters to the local community and visitors to the area.
From this engagement, approximately one third of responses in relation to ‘what is important’ related to the natural environment, particularly the beach. Other important aspects were local identity, street trees, pedestrian access, seating, meeting places, personal safety, public art and footpath quality.
This feedback has helped us to establish a vision that will inform design concepts that aim to improve the street environment and public spaces, and ultimately contribute to the liveability of Coolangatta and Kirra.
The Vision of the project is to celebrate the uniqueness of the place and enhance the experience of being in Coolangatta and Kirra by:
- improving the walking experience
- celebrating the history, beach culture, location and relaxed vibe
- looking for opportunities to improve cycling.
Once the design concepts for the project have been finalised, the community will be invited to have their say about the master plan with consultation to be held early in 2019 for a period of three weeks. Feedback from the consultation will be tabled at the next stakeholder workshops and inform final concepts.
