Council Update: What’s Happening in Our Backyard
In this update, Councillor Gail O'Neill shares the latest developments in Division 14, from exciting local events to infrastructure projects and upgrades. Stay informed about the activities and improvements enhancing our community.
There’s a lot happening in Division 14 right now, with numerous projects in progress and planned for the next financial year. Plus, there are plenty of events for residents and tourists to enjoy in the coming months.
The Kirra Hill stabilization project is ongoing and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Once finished, the new Kirra Eagle will be installed on top of the hill.
The section of Oceanway between Wagawn and Elizabeth Streets in Tugun has now been widened and upgraded. Work is still underway on the widening of the Oceanway near Vikings Surf Club in Currumbin, with an expected completion date of early 2025. This project includes installation of a seawall.
The SWELL Sculpture Festival kicks off on September 6 and runs through September 15, marking its 22nd year. With over 60 large-scale sculptural artworks displayed along the beach at Currumbin, this is an event you won’t want to miss.
We’ve welcomed back some incredible Spring weather early to the Gold Coast, and we're making the most of this wonderful time of year by bringing back Seaside Sounds at Roughton Park in Kirra in October and November. *Dates to be confirmed.
The Beach 5s Rugby event will take place at Greenmount Beach from October 25-27. Now in its 7th year since being established in 2018, this exciting and vibrant weekend is one you won’t want to miss. This event gives a boost to our local economy with participants, family and friends staying in and around the local business area.
One of our best tourist attractions, Greenmount headland, has recently had some upgrades to the viewing platforms and we are currently in the planning stage to renew the decks, access structures, and pathway around the headland, with community engagement and early concept design set to take place from mid-2024 to 2025.
Kind regards
Gail O’Neill
