Council Update: What’s Happening in Our Backyard
In this update, Councillor Gail O'Neill shares the latest accomplishments in Division 14, from exciting local events to infrastructure projects and upgrades. Stay informed about the activities and improvements enhancing our community.
Cooly Rocks On – Starts This Week!
Coolangatta is set to come alive from 4–8 June as Cooly Rocks On returns! This iconic celebration of the 50s, 60s and 70s brings with it over 900 classic cars, live rockabilly and swing performances, and the always-popular Elvis Tribute Artist Contest. It’s a huge highlight for our region—drawing thousands of visitors, boosting local business, and celebrating the golden era of motorcars, music, and community. This year they are also incorporating the 80s so if you love that era you can’t miss it! More info at coolyrockson.com.au.
Working Towards Safer Shared Pathways
E-bikes are fast becoming a preferred mode of transport across our region—but concerns about speed and rider behaviour on shared pathways are growing, particularly around the Oceanway.
While Council can’t enforce penalties (that’s up to the QPS and State Government), I’ve been advocating for change since two serious incidents last year involving young children. I’m pleased that our local MP Laura Gerber has helped secure a Parliamentary Inquiry into E-bike and E-scooter safety.
Meanwhile, The City are continuing local education campaigns and safety signage, and Police are increasing enforcement on illegal E-bikes. I encourage concerned residents to stay engaged and continue voicing their concerns toward our Local Member Laura Gerber.
Currumbin Creek Seawall Renewal
With the Oceanway now complete at Vikings Surf Club, the next focus is on upgrading the southern training wall at Currumbin Creek.
This project will:
• Reconstruct 210 metres of the existing wall
• Create a new disability-accessible path for pedestrians and lifeguard vehicles
• Add new beach access points and a viewing platform
Construction begins mid-year and will wrap up in mid-2026. These improvements will boost access, safety and enjoyment for locals and visitors alike.
Pacific Parade Roadworks – Bilinga
You may have already noticed works underway along Pacific Parade in Bilinga. This is a major road renewal—not new construction—and includes full pavement reconstruction, new kerbing, driveway repairs, and parking upgrades.
We're taking great care around the beloved Norfolk pines—a Council arborist is inspecting them to ensure only unhealthy trees are removed, with replanting planned.
Please allow extra travel time during construction. Detours will be clearly signed, and we’ll keep residents and businesses informed every step of the way.
Kirra Longboard Klassic – August 2025
Looking ahead, the much-loved Kirra Longboard Klassic will return in August 2025. Kicking off with the Waves of Expression art and photography exhibition in July, the event will celebrate longboarding, creativity and fun at beautiful Kirra Beach.
Expect live music, eco-initiatives, and fan-favourite competitions like the Fancy Dress Surfing division and the ‘Most Fun Surfer’ award. Whether you're catching waves or watching from the sand, it's always a great day out. More information can be found here: www.kirralongboardklassic.com
