Council Update: What's Happening in Our Backyard
In this update, Councillor Josh Martin shares the latest developments in Division 13, from infrastructure projects to fun local events.
As we approach a busy economic period, there's an unmistakable sense of excitement in the Division 13 community. We are making meaningful progress on infrastructure projects that will significantly enhance amenities in our area. I’m pleased to announce the completion and scheduled construction of key footpaths that will fill critical gaps in our active travel network, alongside various park asset improvements across our division. A highlight is the recently completed $3.4 million Tallebudgera Creek Park improvement project, which has unveiled a new scenic section of the Gold Coast Oceanway.
The upgraded 100-metre boardwalk has been widened from 2 to 4 metres, enhancing safety and accessibility for all visitors. Key improvements include new support piers, additional seating, landscaping, improved lighting and a viewing platform offering users a chance to enjoy the picturesque surroundings. Together with this, approximately 150 metres of the Oceanway have been widened, and a rock wall has been installed to mitigate erosion caused by flooding and swell events. These upgrades, co-funded by Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program and the City of Gold Coast, align with our commitment to the City’s ‘Our Natural City Strategy’ and promoting sustainable travel options.
The Burleigh bEATS Street Festival, held on Saturday 14 September, was a resounding success in bringing together the Division 13 community, with an event attendance of over 3000 people. With offerings of live music, delicious street eats, and activities for kids, the free event not only entertained but also provided a helpful economic uplift to local Burleigh businesses. The festival’s success has sparked enthusiasm from local businesses for the next edition, with planning already underway for a Burleigh Heads community festival in 2025. I’m eager to build on this success and engage with our local businesses to create an even more dynamic experience next year. Over the coming months, consultation with local businesses will be prioritised to gather feedback and ideas, ensuring that the street festival continues to be a true reflection of Burleigh’s unique character.
Looking ahead, we have an extensive line-up of community events lined up over the spring and summer seasons. The Feast on Fifth Street Festival returns to Palm Beach on Saturday 19 October, promising a lively street party on Fifth Ave. Movies Under the Stars will light up Burleigh Heads and Palm Beach in November 2024 and January 2025, offering a great evening for the whole family. Planning is also well underway to deliver the ‘Burleigh Sunday Sounds’ live music series in Memorial Park on Sunday afternoons throughout November. While distinctively different, these activations all share a common strategic goal: to connect our community and provide an economic boost for our local businesses.
