Meet the Candidate - Katrina Beikoff
Meet Katrina, council candidate for Division 13
I am asking for your vote at the 28 March 2020 Council election for energetic, smart, proactive representation for Palm Beach, Burleigh, Tallebudgera and Elanora.
I have been knocking on doors of your homes and businesses for the past six months to listen to your issues and views. I also stood at the 2016 election with a plan for traffic congestion and to ensure community involvement and control in renewal and development in Palm Beach.
I am standing again in 2020 to make a positive difference for our community and to bring smart solutions to the big issues we are facing from Burleigh through Palm Beach, Tally and Elanora now and as we move forward.
I offer a proactive plan built on experience and skills from my career and my long-standing and active involvement in our community.
My plan and solutions will help:
- Regain control of development
- Address our traffic congestion
- Protect the unique character of our communities.
ABOUT ME
Professionally, I am an investigative journalist by background. I was awarded Australia's most prestigious prize for journalism, the Walkley Award, for a world exclusive in which I investigated and exposed cheating and a cover up at the highest levels of US and international sport. I was also named a Walkley Award national finalist on two other occasions for my breakthrough investigations.
I now consult as a communication strategist and serve on advisory committees and panels. I also continue to write - currently in the financial space to support women's financial literacy. And I am an author, with four titles published.
In our community I volunteer across numerous groups and organisations and hold the following positions:
- Senior Vice President of the Palm Beach Currumbin Junior Australian Football Club
- Patrolling member of the Pacific Surf Lifesaving Club
- P&C member at Palm Beach Currumbin State High School.
MY PLAN
One of the key projects I will deliver as your councillor sits under my plan for action on traffic congestion.
I will do this by delivering better and safer bike paths, crossings, lighting and facilities to make our area the safest and most accessible on the Gold Coast for cyclists and pedestrians. This will make us the blueprint for active transport on the Gold Coast and help take local traffic off the roads.
Other features of my plan on traffic congestion includes:
- Fighting for desperately-needed public transport – I advocate prioritising the heavy rail from Varsity Lakes to the Gold Coast Airport as the premier public transport infrastructure link we need to ease commuter traffic and alleviate pressure on the M1
- I support the Pacific Motorway Varsity Lakes (Exit 85) to Tugun (Exit 95) upgrade
- I support continuing the Free Seniors Bus Travel Initiative
- I support continuing the City of Gold Coast Council Cab service to The Pines on Thursdays.
I look forward to listening, having a chat, and answering your questions.
Thank you,
Katrina
