Meet the Candidate - Kaylee Campradt
Meet Kaylee, Labour candidate for the State seat of Currumbin
I grew up in Currumbin Valley, I went to school here, and now my husband Troy and I are raising our two kids
here. I want my kids to have every opportunity to thrive in our wonderful community.
I understand that a good future for our children requires a vibrant local economy, and an active, engaged
community. That’s why I have been so active in the local and state P&C, our local health advisory board, and in
my children’s sports clubs.
Our Government also has a crucial role, and that’s why I’m standing for Currumbin.
I love this area and I love our community. For too long the southern Gold Coast has been seen as the end of the
line – or missed out on our share of resources or investment. Now is a time for change. We have a rare
opportunity with this by-election to put Currumbin’s agenda on the table.
We are living in times of great change – the digital revolution and the transition from carbon. Both of these
disruptions bring about risks and uncertainty, but also opportunities. The southern Gold Coast has some great
competitive advantages that can help us grasp these opportunities.
We have great lifestyle and natural beauty – the things we all love about where we live are ideal for attracting
knowledge workers and the new enterprises needed for these transitions.
We have a history of ambition and success – from local surfers creating a global industry from a marginalised
hobby, to the more recent success of Balter Brewery. We have a culture of creativity and innovation – as
evidenced by Swell Sculpture Festival, Bleach Festival and Cooly Rocks On.
With a university and international airport in the electorate we can connect to research and global business.
Government has a role in bringing this all together – in encouraging, facilitating and nurturing innovation.
Protecting our unique lifestyle and preserving the places and spaces we love is a crucial element in securing our
future, not something that is in the way or needs to be sacrificed.
We do, however, desperately need to solve the transport puzzle. The State Government’s multi-modal transport
study has given the southern Gold Coast some real options, and more importantly, a vehicle for us to have a
serious discussion about action on transport.
We need to make sure that the choices we make today, don’t close off opportunities tomorrow – that we secure
heavy rail to the airport, and that the actions we take are effective, but don’t destroy our cherished local villages.
Whatever our future looks like, ensuring every child gets every chance starts with a good education system. As a
long term P&C activist – including seven years as President of the Currumbin State School P&C, I know it is a fight
to make sure our schools have the right equipment, fair funding, and world class learning outcomes.
The March 28 by-election is a rare opportunity for us; we should use it to choose what is best for Currumbin.
