Andrew Armstrong is a dad to three, a loving husband and a self-proclaimed bad surfer; all the while managing his passion of design for people and community. With extensive experience in education, healthcare, residential care and community projects, Andrew holds sustainability as central to ensuring the success of each project. It's not uncommon to hear how the service and tourism industry has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, but we can easily forget about how major or minor projects going on holding or being cancelled has placed financial stress on practices and contractors across the city. The immediate effect for Andrew has been through projects slowing as clients have had to focus on a critical day to day issues as a result of the effects of Covid19.
That hasn't stopped Andrew and his team who have embraced the challenge and are already exploring future opportunities with clients in the use of technology and ensuring the importance of creating people spaces. Andrew explains that while the fast-tracking of Government funding for infrastructure is seen as being a positive move, approval time frames need to keep pace as well as ensuring that the long term outcomes don’t suffer from the short term need to spend money to sustain the economy.
"After the recession of the early 90’s we focused on projects that had degree of Government funding providing a buffer to some of the economic fluctuations. It reinforced our values in designing for people and communities. The flexibility to embrace and lead change is essential as a result of Covid. Supporting each other through this and beyond is fundamental to rebuilding our communities. Buying local, investing in our combined future has to be one of the most important outcomes from Covid 19. - Andrew Armstrong
