Member Spotlight: Golden Words Proofreading & PR
As the world moves online, Golden Words is your friendly and affordable solution to concise, clear and error free communication.
With 15 years experience in public relations, publicity, media relations, strategic media, and communications, issues management, and crisis management as well as being a copy editor, copywriter, and proofreader, with an English degree; Golden Words Proofreading & PR founder and owner Malina Hamilton-Smith offers your small business an affordable proofreading and exemplary local PR services, media campaigns, strategic communications, and reputation/crisis management services. Holding humble roots, Melina's business began with when she moved to the Gold Coast 5 years ago.
I discovered there are a lot of small businesses here – more than anywhere else in the country. I spoke with quite a few locals who had small businesses of their own and I found that some felt they could do with a bit of help finessing content for their websites and promotional and business documents.
Malina has embraced an online presence and offers an easy submission portal for those seeking support with documents or media communications in lieu of long term services. Here you can upload the documents you’d like to have proofread or edited by a PR professional and charged by the number of words and level of service – ie. Basic proofread, proof-edit, or premium edit/rewrite – starting at $25 for a basic proofread of a page of up to 500 words. Malina says this was central to ensuring her clients could receive quick and convenient support in this fast-paced world.
Malina's business model is designed to not only withstand COVID-19 but to thrive in it, admitting that everyone is familiar with working online, remotely and speaking via zoom. Though Golden Words isn't completely immune to the challenge with restrictions making launching the business and connecting with potential clients challenging. The resilience of Golden Words Proofreading & PR is directly attributable to Malina's ability to sustain an adaptable, resourceful, frugal and self-sufficient business model. Her advice to members is to focus on the basics and focus on delivering the best product and service you can, the word-of-mouth referral that comes from happy customers is the best (and cheapest) form of marketing you can do for your business.
If business is quieter than usual, the downtime might be a good opportunity to have a look at your website, promotional materials and social media profiles and see if the content could do with an update or refresh. It can be hard to find time to do that when business is busy!
