‘Ocean Fiesta’ is making waves at Palm Beach Surf Club
Palm Beach Surf Club doubles down on its commitment to sustainability with ‘Ocean Fiesta’, an epic celebration of all things ocean and marine life running until the end of October 2020.
Following on from its 2019 win for ‘Best Surf Club on the Gold Coast’ and the one year anniversary of its ‘Ocean Friendly’ certification from the Surfrider Foundation, Palm Beach Surf Club is making good on its commitment to the preservation of our stunning seaside by inviting Gold Coasters to its inaugural ‘Ocean Fiesta’.
‘Ocean Fiesta’ is about bringing the community together in the spirit of conservation and celebration of our precious marine backyard, with a program awash with live entertainment, educational activities, sustainability soirees and a range of delicious specials.
The fiesta welcomes the support of Palm Beach Surf Life Saving Club’s newest southern Gold Coast based sponsor, Glowing Green Australia, for their advice and expertise reducing the Club’s environmental footprint. The Club is further reducing single use plastics by launching the latest green initiative ‘Palmy Crusades’.
Developed with Glowing Green Australia, ‘Palmy Crusaders’ is an environment friendly, 100 per cent compostable education and activity leaflet for kids where they can learn about marine animals, recycling and discover why protecting our environment is so vitally important here on the Gold Coast.
Larissa Rose, Director of Glowing Green Australia said,
"It is imperative if we are to be building the leaders of the future that we model behaviours and develop resources that support environmental education and beach management, and this is exactly what we are achieving by developing the Palmy Crusaders leaflet with no packaging, crayons and plastic stickers.
During the September school holidays, little crusaders did a deep dive into the lives of turtles and weird and wonderful nudibranchs with thanks to Gold Coast environmental group ‘Ocean Connect. On 3 and 4 October kids have opportunity to learn about Dune care, enjoy sandcastle making and beach games with GeckoED, another Southern Gold Coast environmental group making an impact Gold Coast wide.
MealieArt Australia was engaged to bring the sea indoors with their impressive installation of upcycled marine art which can be viewed all month. Once you’re done browsing the art, take an oceanfront seat and enjoy the breathtaking view as you turn your attention to the Club’s tropical-inspired menu. Seafood lovers will delight in the range specials on sustainably sourced Queensland prawns and scallops, while indulging in exotic cocktails and icy cold beer.
October sees the return of the humpback whale migration south through the Pacific Ocean. In celebration of these majestic creatures and the Club’s abundance of unique vantage points, the weekend of 24 and 25 will see marine mammal research and protection event ‘Humpbacks & Highrises’ produce a mini version of their beloved annual event.
Of course, Nippers season also kicks off 10 October, with Palm Beach Surf Life Saving Club’s hugely popular program the only one on the Gold Coast which runs on a Saturday.
Palm Beach Surf Club is one of the few surf clubs positioned directly on the beach, and they take their job to protect our oceans very seriously. Club Executive Manager Daragh Murphy has spearheaded the Club’s transformation into a pioneering sustainable venue.
“The Club has a passionate team who have worked solidly for the last few years to ensure we are as sustainable and ocean-friendly as possible, and the ‘Ocean Fiesta’ is another initiative to continue to keep the wider community involved in what we’re been doing,” he said.
“We are very much looking forward to showcasing the excellent work of our sustainability partners throughout the two months, and educating the public about how they can best contribute to the conservation of our most valuable natural asset. All while having a whale of a time, of course!”
‘Ocean Fiesta’ will be presented in partnership with Southern Gold Coast based businesses Glowing Green Environmental Consultancy and Balter Brewing, Gold Coast not-for-profit environmental groups Surfrider Foundation, Humpbacks & Highrises, Ocean Connect and GECKO Environmental Council.
