Queensland Border Update: Tom Tate calls for re-opening
Gold Coast businesses still waiting on border relief and Mayor Tom Tate has joined them
Mayor Tom Tate, after a coronavirus pandemic briefing from the Premier on Thursday, told the media that “Things have changed since the Black Lives Matters demonstration and everyone is now asking when things will reopen. By Saturday (13/06) if there are no positive cases in Queensland as a result, we need to start planning for restrictions to be lifted for us to be able to capture the school holiday traffic.” Queensland Airports Ltd CEO Chris Mills warned on Thursday the city is on the cusp of losing the school holidays influx from June 27-July 12.
Duffy Down Under Boat Hire owner Gordon Kerr said the Government was “delusional’’ to argue the border closures had no impact on business. Dreamweavers events management chief operating officer John Bond said it “seems ridiculous other states appear to be getting on with business and Queensland isn’t”. QT Gold Coast general manager Steve Oakley said: “I think now as an operator it feels like Queensland is out of the woods and we just want to see the borders open.
