Tourism operators unite in protest against border closure
Frustrated owners and workers from the Gold Coast tourism industry have staged a noisy protest against Queensland’s ongoing border closure.
Protests occurred on the morning of June 02nd, in Surfers Paradise, Cairns and the Sunshine Coast, to urge the Premier to provide clarity and open the borders in July. It’s called the ‘toot for tourism’ campaign, with operators staging a car protest (in keeping in line with coronavirus gathering restrictions still in place). About 50 cars took part in the demonstration, which saw a convoy covered in placards travel from The Spit to Surfers Paradise.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has refused to buckle to pressure to reverse her decision to keep the borders closed during the coronavirus crisis.
