Council Update with Cr Gail O’Neill – August 2026

There is plenty happening across Division 14, with exciting projects and initiatives continuing to enhance our coastline, community spaces, visitor experiences and natural environment.

Supporting Nature-Based Tourism in Currumbin

It was a pleasure to recently attend the official launch of TreeTop Challenge Currumbin’s new curriculum-aligned school excursion program, proudly supported through the City of Gold Coast’s Nature-Based Tourism Program.

The innovative program combines outdoor adventure with hands-on learning, helping students connect with nature while bringing classroom subjects to life high above the rainforest floor.

This is a fantastic local success story that brings together education, tourism and our incredible natural environment. Programs like this help showcase the unique experiences available in Division 14 while supporting sustainable tourism and creating lasting benefits for future generations.

A big thank you to the TreeTop Challenge team, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, Exceptional Experiences and everyone involved in bringing this exciting initiative to life right here on the southern Gold Coast.

Currumbin Training Wall Renewal Nearing Completion

The Currumbin Training Wall Renewal Project is now nearing completion, with works expected to be finished by the end of August, weather permitting.

The renewal of this important coastal asset will help ensure the long-term protection of the Currumbin Creek entrance and surrounding coastline, while also delivering community benefits including improved beach access, new seating areas and upgraded public amenities.

A special feature of the completed project will be the installation of the sister statue to Sun Spirit, which was generously donated to the City following the theft of the original sculpture. Sun Spirit’s Coastal Sister will find its permanent home at the training wall, creating a meaningful addition to this iconic coastal location.

New Pump Track Planned for Tugun

I’m thrilled to see plans progressing for a brand-new Pump Track at Betty Diamond Sports Complex, funded through the City’s 2026-27 Budget.

Located behind the existing skate park, the facility will cater for riders of all ages and abilities, with dedicated junior, intermediate and advanced sections designed for balance bikes, BMX riders, scooters and skateboarders. It will provide another fantastic outdoor recreation space where young people can build skills, stay active and connect with friends and family.

The current project timeline includes:

  • Contract award anticipated in September 2026
  • Community consultation on the detailed design in October 2026
  • Construction expected to commence in early 2027

Projects like this help create more opportunities for active recreation and provide lasting benefits for our growing community.
