Council Update with Cr Gail O’Neill – July 2026

The continued success of Cooly Rocks On is a powerful reminder of the important role major events play in supporting the southern Gold Coast economy. Each year, the festival attracts tens of thousands of visitors to our region, bringing valuable trade to local accommodation providers, hospitality venues, retailers and tourism operators. As I have said previously, Cooly Rocks On has delivered a significant economic boost to our area over many years, while also showcasing the unique character and lifestyle of the southern Gold Coast.

The good news for local businesses is that the momentum continues well beyond winter. Over the coming months, we will welcome a fantastic calendar of events including the Kirra Longboard Klassic, Swell Sculpture Festival, GC50 Run Festival and the iconic Coolangatta Gold. Event organisers have also submitted an application to bring the Red Hot Summer Festival to Coolangatta later this year, highlighting the growing interest in the southern Gold Coast as a destination for major events and entertainment.

These events do far more than provide entertainment. They attract visitors who stay in local accommodation, dine in local restaurants and cafes, shop with local businesses and experience everything our region has to offer. They also help build the southern Gold Coast’s reputation as a premier destination for sport, arts, culture and tourism.

For businesses, this ongoing pipeline of events provides valuable opportunities to capture visitor spending, increase brand exposure and connect with new customers.

As a community, we should be proud that the southern Gold Coast continues to attract events of this calibre. They not only contribute to our economy but also showcase our incredible beaches, natural environment and vibrant local business community to visitors from across Australia and beyond.
The future remains bright for the southern Gold Coast, and events continue to play an important role in driving economic activity and supporting local jobs.
