Council Update with Cr Gail O’Neill – June 2026

An iconic sculpture, the Kirra Eagle, featured in many Gold Coast tourism campaigns, has returned to its rightful home, and I’m thrilled to welcome it back.
It has been a long journey over the past five years to reach this point, with many people involved along the way. I would like to acknowledge the late artist Craig Medson’s family, ARTPark, and artist Tobias Bennett, who created the new eagle, along with the many City project officers who have worked diligently behind the scenes to bring this project to life.
Maintenance works on Kirra Hill are scheduled following Cooly Rocks On, with additional planting scheduled to help soften the shotcrete areas, along with ongoing inspections and maintenance of the mesh system to ensure long-term stability of the site.

Disability Access – Have Your Say
The City is currently seeking community feedback on accessibility across our public spaces, and I encourage you to take part or share this opportunity with your networks.
This consultation recognises that disability includes a wide range of lived experiences, including visible and invisible disabilities, neurodivergence, sensory needs, chronic illness and mental health conditions. Feedback will help identify what is working well, where barriers exist and where improvements are needed across places such as parks, community centres, sporting facilities and beaches.
Consultation has been extended until 19 June 2026, and participants can also go into the draw to win one of three $250 gift vouchers.

Greenmount Headland Revitalisation Project – Update
With ever increasing visitors to the Southern Gold Coast I am really pleased that planning is underway for the upgrade of the Greenmount Headland walkway and viewing areas to ensure this iconic location remains safe, accessible and resilient into the future.
Many of the existing paths and platforms are reaching end of life and require increasing maintenance. The proposed upgrade will introduce more durable, low-maintenance materials suited to the coastal environment while responding directly to community feedback.
Key elements of the updated design include a reduced concrete footprint, a raised timber boardwalk, improved accessible pathways, enhanced viewing areas, and requirements for cyclists and e-mobility users to dismount.
The project is now progressing through detailed design, with construction expected from mid-2027.

2026/27 City Budget
The City is preparing to adopt the 2026/27 budget on 15 June. I am very aware of the ongoing pressures facing businesses in Division 14, particularly our small business community, and the impact that budget decisions can have. Please be assured that these concerns remain a key consideration as the City works through finalising the budget, with a focus on balancing responsible investment with the needs of our local economy.

If you wish to speak with me about any concerns or ideas you have for Division 14, please contact my office on 07 5581 5275 to arrange an appointment.
Regards, Gail
