STOP THE PRESSES – The Honourable KAREN ANDREWS MP, Federal Member for McPherson & Minister for Home Affairs, will now be joining us by video link to give a presentation.

Please join us for our 2021 AGM and special guest speakers on Thursday 16th September at the Currumbin RSL commencing at 7am. This breakfast event is free for SGC financial members.

There will be a formal element to the morning as the Chamber holds its annual AGM and we will also have a couple of special guest speakers with insightful presentations on topics relevant to all Businesses and now being joined by Karen Andrews MP.

 

The Honourable KAREN ANDREWS MP, Federal Member for McPherson & Minister for Home Affairs

Karen Andrews was elected in 2010 to represent the Federal Seat of McPherson and has been re-elected in 2013, 2016 and 2019.

Karen was sworn in as Minister for Industry, Science and Technology in the Morrison Government Cabinet in August 2018. In doing so, she became the first ever female cabinet minister from Queensland.

In March 2021, Karen was elevated to the Minister for Home Affairs, with portfolio responsibilities including Australia’s domestic security and law enforcement agencies, cyber security policy, counter terrorism, counter espionage and foreign interference, counter child sexual exploitation, and preparation for the gradual re-opening of Australia’s international borders.

Locally, Karen fought for the delivery of $1 billion in funding for upgrades to the M1, including the widening of the stretch from Varsity Lakes to Tugun, and lists this among her proudest achievements for the Southern Gold Coast.

Karen is a local southern Gold Coaster and is a strong supporter of the not-for-profit sector and their contribution to local communities. Karen is also passionate about helping the Veteran community which is influenced by the tireless work of her father through his contributions in assisting TPI pensioners.

Karen’s qualifications include a BEng(Mech)(Queensland University of Technology), GradDip in Industrial Relations (Victoria University) and a Certificate in Mediation (Institute of Arbitrators and Mediators Australia).
