From swimming to skis, from boards to boats, everything they do, every event in which they compete is there for a single purpose, to save lives on the beach. With over 7,000 competitors from 313 Clubs competing in 451 events over nine action packed days – it’s an event not to be missed! Its where Surf Life Savers come together and test what they do best.

The Southern Gold Coast Chamber of Commerce has had a long standing relationship with the local high schools during Australian Business Week. ABW is a project where year 9 pupils take a week out of school lessons to run their own company.

The Creek to Creek and Southern Gold Coast chambers are considering a merger between the two Chambers. A small group from each Executive Committee have been meeting regularly and we are close to calling for EGM’s to occur to move us to the next phase.

Our next meeting is hosted by The Central Chamber, who are facilitating a Meet the Candidates for Breakfast on 14 June at the Palmer Colonial Gold Course.

The most recent Chamber meeting was the breakfast on Thursday 2 June at the RSL. The June meeting was a joint event hosted by the Creek to Creek Chamber of Commerce and the Southern Gold Coast Chamber of Commerce. The Gold Coast Airport recently announced Project Lift and is also currently master-planning for the next 20 years.

On 17 May the Creek to Creek Chamber of Commerce members were invited to a joint breakfast hosted by the Southern Gold Coast Chamber of Commerce at the Coolangatta Surf Club, where Karen Andrews MP, Assistant Minister for Science and the Federal Member for McPherson was guest of honour.

On 7 April we held our April breakfast at Currumbin RSL. The event was a joint breakfast with the Southern Gold Coast Chamber of Commerce. Following the Council Elections it seemed fitting that we welcome our new Division 14 Councillor to talk to us all about her vision for the Division.

During the 2016 Local Council election process each candidate for the two local Divisions, 13 and 14, and the Mayoral candidates, were offered the opportunity to put their platform for election into 500 words for posting on our website. Sadly some didn’t respond and perhaps that was a measure of their hopes of being elected.

The AGM was held in February.

It’s time to have your say on the future extension of light rail for the southern Gold Coast.

Connecting Southern Gold Coast (CSGC) is calling for local small business owners to join a subsidised business workshop training program to enhance their business skills, commencing in November.

Several of the city’s Chambers of Commerce have come out in support of the installation of an Instrument Landing System (ILS) at Gold Coast Airport.

Representing the business community in regions under the proposed ILS flight path, the Southern Gold Coast, Creek to Creek and Gold Coast Central Chambers of Commerce have written letters to the Airport supporting the installation of an ILS.

On Friday May 8th a number of the Creek to Creek Committee members were invited to join a group of other interested parties to discuss and workshop the concepts being considered for the development of the Palm Beach commercial zone. Ian Grace and Chris Ward joined Hilary Jacobs at this important developmental meeting.

Early in May, our new President, Hilary Jacobs and re-elected Vice President, Chris Ward, took time out to meet with Mayor Tom Tate at his offices in Southport. The meeting was a great success with the new President introducing herself and acquainting the Mayor with the issues which the Chamber sees as vital to the growth of the Creek to Creek catchment.

Recently a programme for Skilling Queenslanders was announced by the Premier. The aim to help long term unemployed and younger people to find a path to meaningful work.

Our long time Creek To Creek Chamber President Darren Mackintosh stood aside at the recent AGM following 10 years of sterling service to the Chamber and the local business community. In recognition of his dedication to the Chamber he was awarded a Life Time Membership.

Anne Stovin is the CEO of the Currumbin RSL. Anne is yet again orchestrating what is always a major event for the RSL, The Anzacs Day Dawn Service at Elephant Rock.

The main event of the April breakfast was an opportunity for our members and guests to suggest how the Chamber can improve and the issues which the Chamber should champion on behalf of the local community.

Our last breakfast highlighted that the links between heavy rail, light rail and the Airport were important to our Chamber.

On the 25 March, Council endorsed the Palm Beach Shoreline Project (PBSP) moving into the next stage of the project – detailed design.

This means that the concept chosen as the best solution for Palm Beach will now be modelled physically and further numerically to test the assumptions and findings made during concept design.

There are over 2 million small businesses in Australia, employing over 7 million people. That’s over 60% of our workforce. Yet, for too many years, small business here has been overtaxed, over regulated and overlooked by government.

The Palm Beach Shoreline Project feasibility study has reviewed research data and reports about coastal management and the Palm Beach environment to assess the feasibility of coastal management schemes. 18 management options were identified. These were assessed and the following seven schemes were shortlisted for further assessment.

Council has developed the Draft Ocean Beaches Strategy 2013-23 which outlines the preferred approach to managing the city's 52 kilometres of ocean beaches. This strategy will guide how we protect, enhance and fund the management of our iconic beaches over the next 10 years.
